Stability in Electrochemistry: Tips for Accurate pH and Ion Measurement
Introduction
A pH meter is only as good as its electrode. In many labs, "reading drift" is the most common frustration. Achieving stable, repeatable results requires an understanding of the chemistry at the tip of the probe.
Best Practices for Lab Managers:
The Nernst Equation: Understanding that pH is temperature-dependent (59.16mV/pH at 25℃). Use Automatic Temperature Compensation (ATC).
Hydration: Never store a pH electrode dry. Always use the recommended storage solution (KCl).
Calibration: Use a minimum of 3 buffers (4.0, 7.0, 10.0) to ensure linearity across the entire scale.
Ion Selective Electrodes (ISE)
For ions like Copper, Nitrogen, or Fluoride, specialized meters offer direct concentration readings, providing a faster alternative to chromatography for specific ion monitoring.
